This practical and informative 2 day course offers a comprehensive and industry approved introduction to the laying, cutting and grouting techniques of Porcelain paving.

The course also covers; setting out, what tools are required, bases, mixes, health and safety, manual handling, jointing and dressing and relevant legislation.

Learning Outcomes

• Know and be able to describe the advantages and disadvantages of porcelain stone vs natural and concrete products

• Understand the principles of site safety, organisation and professional working practices when creating a paved area

• Be able to risk assess the proposed work area for hazards and obstacles and know how to detect and work around underground service

• Know how to establish and make safe access route for materials, equipment etc

• Be able to set out the area intended for paving using 3:4:5 triangles (Pythagoras’ theorem) and other geometric principles.

• Be able to calculate and set falls and gradients appropriate to the conditions and materials being used

• Know how to excavate the intended paved area accurately and dispose of spoil appropriately.

• Understand and be able to describe the terms Sub-grade, Formation level, Sub-base, Base, Bedding course, Wearing course and the construction requirements for each.

• Be able to create a suitable and effective mortar mix for the intended paving

• Understand the importance of using a priming agent/slurry to underside of paving

• Know a variety of effective and less effective slab laying techniques and be able to evaluate each

• To be able to use a variety of tile levelling equipment

• Be able to lay an area of paving to a specified level and to within industry recognised tolerances

• Understand methods of handling and cutting of porcelain

• Know and be able to execute a variety of jointing options and techniques

Classroom plus practical workshop sessions.

GOOD TO KNOW

Free membership access (worth £50) to The Landscape Library for 6 months, for all course participants once they have attended a TASK Industry course (includes access to training resources, articles, features, templates, publications, advice notes, cross section drawings and mentorship) .   • Lunch is not included, we recommend you bring your own packed lunch for each day

  • There is currently no accommodation available at Lower End Farm for TASK students. There are plenty of local accommodation possibilities, please contact us for a range of options.

  • Participants are required to have a minimum level 2 in English and Maths.
